why does the iron article does not corrode even after the galvanized zinc coat is removed?

Zinc coat reacts with oxygen in the atmosphere and zinc oxide layer is formed on the iron article this layer protects the iron article from further oxidation which cause rusting ,even after the zinc coat is removed
