why does the iron nail become brownish in colour and the blue colour of copper sulphate solution fade

Because copper gets displaced from copper II sulphate solution by iron.Then the reaction gives us iron sulphate and copper

Bcoz there happened a chemical reaction knowon as displacement reaction by this reaction iron displaces copper from copper sulphate solution So by this iron acquired brownish color
