Its because of displacement of iron

The iron nail becomes brownish in colour because....
1) iron reacts with the oxygen present in the air.
2)as iron gains oxygen or oxidation reaction takes place the iron rusts.
3) And hence a brownish layer of rust is formed on the iron nail.
