Answer:

Metallic character decreases as you move across a period in the periodic table from left to right. This occurs as atoms more readily accept electrons to fill a valence shell than lose them to remove the unfilled shell. Metallic character increases as you move down an element group in the periodic table.

Firstly, we have to know the properties of metals and non metals.

Metals generally have 1, 2, 3 electrons in the valence shell. Thus they have an high affinity in losing their electrons in order to complete the electronic configuration or to become octet. This property is known as electro-positivity

While non metals generally have 5,6,7 electrons in the valence shell. Thus they have a high affinity in gaining electrons to complete their electronic configuration. This property is known as electro-negativity

The elements in the left side have 1, 2, and 3 electrons in their last shell. That's why they are metals. As we move from left to right, their affinity of losing electrons decreases, and gaining electrons increases. So, we can say that metallic characters goes on decreasing while going from left to right in the period.
