A common year has 365 days and a leap year 366 days, with the extra--or intercalary--day designated as February 29. A leap year occurs every four years to help synchronize the calendar year with the solar year, or the length of time it takes the earth to complete its orbit around the sun, which is about 365and¼ days.

The month of February have 29 days after every 4 years because -

• After every four years we have the leap years in our calendar which basically have 29 days in the month of february instead of 28 days.

• Now,the year is calculated by the time taken by earth to complete a full revolution around the sun.

• Now,the time of rotation is actually 365 ¼ days but for simplicity purpose we take the year as 365 days.

• Now,if we add ¼th of the day for continuous 4 years then we will get a single extra day. This extra one day is adjusted in the 29th day of the month of february of the leap year which comes after every four years.

• In this way,we manage the time gap which was created by rounding off the time taken for earth's revolution.
