As the Sun sets, the Moon rises with the side that faces Earth fully exposed to sunlight.The Moon has phases because it orbits Earth, which causes the portion we see illuminated to change.

We onot see the moon because the sunlight reflect back to us from it surface .. During the course of the month the moon circle one around the earth .. of we could magically look down on our solar system. we would see that the half of the moon facing the Sun is always lit.. But the lit side doesn't always face the earth..
