The narrator refer the two young boys as gentlemen because:
⬛ Even though they were young they were matured far beyond their ages.
⬛They did a lot of jobs that a lot of children doesn't do.
⬛They were hardworking and didn't want anything for themselves.
⬛Their selfless attitude must really gain a lot of honour.
⬛Moreover their determination, dedication, honesty helped them to build up their character which made the narrator call them as gentlemen.
