Why does the narrator say , "I was in a room i knew and did not know "?

ans: This was because the narrator was in a state of confusions,as she was in a room filled with things from her house. However the room dose not belong to her ,Hence,she was in the room as she knew{because it contains it stuff} but she did not know as it was nit her house .

Hi there!
The narrator was totally in the state of confusion as she was in a room of an other person having things which were taken away from her house. Those things gave her the remembrance of her mom and her house, but the room which was filled with the muggy smell and the surroundings was not familiar to her.
It is because of that reason she felt like she was in a room, which she knew but did not know
