why does the narrator say that they were never richer then the movement when his father made the telephone call??​

Answer:According to the narrator his mother often consoled him by telling if we had a character coma he had a better part of wealth .He used to get irritated and told that it would never buy anything for them . By the moment , when his father didn't compromise with honesty for the possession of a car through how much expensive it might be , he realise that they could not be more richer than that . Although they were poor by means, they were richest in the character.
