The narrator thought that the boys he meet in Verona were gentlemen because although they were small in age, they were quite matured. They worked hard day and night to pay for the hospital fees for their sister who was suffering from tuberculosis of the spine.
In spite of being in such a hard condition, they proved to be self dependent and denied for the help of the narrator because they didn't wanted anyone outsider to interfere with their personal matter.
These are the reason for which I've agreed to what narrator thought.
