The poet Rabindranath Tagore compares dead habit to dreary desert because as the desert blocks the way of the clear stream so the age old superstitious beliefs blocks the way of the clear thinking.
Dead habits refer to the old superstitions, customs and the narrow-minded thinking that hampers the progress of mankind.
As the stream loses its way in the dry desert, in the same way man loses the rationality by believing in the superstitions.
