Because the poet was assuming the snake to be his guest, he referred to him as a king, lord, etc. The poet came there after the snake. And as a token of respect to his beautiful guest, the poet decided to wait.

the poet decides to stand and wait till snake has finished drinking because he looks at it as a guest . also, the poet was second to come over there . the snake was the first to come and so the poet must wait . this suggests that the poet was a well mannered and civilised also.
