Why does the poet experience feelings of self-derision,guilt and regret after throwing a log at the snake.

the poet experience feeling of self derision guilt and regret after throwing a log at the snake because at first the snake was moving slowly towards the darker part of the earth i.e. it's hole after drinking water but when the poet threw the log it ran towards it's hole as quickly as a lightening . he could realize the it might hurt the snake and he shouldn't have thrown the log as the snake had no intention of hurting the poet.
