Answer:

The poet could have straightaway brought a ball for the boy, but he wants the boy to understand the grief one goes through after losing something very dear to them. He wants the boy to know that many situations will come his way when he has to accept his fate and move on with his life. We can understand with the reference of the poem that the little boy had a lot of reminiscences with the ball, eventually he had to give up everything because it was his fate, so as to come in the lane of life the poet does not intrude on the boy neither does he buy a ball for him.
