The eastern part of northern India is nearer to the sea and so the on-shore monsoon winds bring about rainfall in these areas. Whereas the western part of northern India is very far from the sea and hence the water contained in the rain bearing winds dry up when passing the eastern part as the rainfall has already occurred while passing through the eastern areas of northern India and so the water that was previously contained is used up.
