The rate of breathing increases while climbing uphill because the atmosphere is very thin at high altitudes and hence the amount of oxygen present in the air deceases. And our body needs more oxygen than what it is getting in normal breathing rate. So to increase the amount of oxygen, the rate of breathing is increased.
