Why does the reaction [CuO + Mg → Product] happen but the reaction [MgO + Cu → No
product] does not

The first reaction is possible because Magnesium (Mg) being more reactive than Copper (Cu) displaces Copper from Copper oxide (CuO).
But in second reaction Cu is less reactive than Mg therefore Cu cannot replace the Mg from MgO. Thus no reaction takes place.
