Hot food is surrounded by hot air. Hot air has more kinetic energy so it can move faster. So it reaches to your nose faster.Cold food is surrounded by Cold air . It has no kinetic energy. So you can't smell the cold food .

When food is hot, diffusion is more. But in cold food diffusion is slow. Hence to get the smell from cold food we have to go close.
