Why does the speaker not teach bassanio how to choose? How long would the speaker have liked to detain bassanio, perhaps, to teach him how to choose? Why would she do so? Is there any difference of portia's treatment towards bassanio than from the other suitors? Why?

Answer:

Merchant of Venice

Explanation:

Bassanio is anxious to make the choice and win Portia. He wants to try his luck and know whether his choice would be right or wrong.

Portia's treatment of Bassanio as a suitor is different from her treatment of other suitors. She was unemotional and business like while talking to the Prince of Morocco and the Prince of Arragon. She was glad to find that they made the wrong choice.

'The Merchant of Venice' by William Shakespeare

Explanation:

  • The speaker does not teach Bassanio how to choose the right casket as she has made an oath to her father and breaking it would be considered a sin.
  • Portia would have liked to wait for a month or two to teach him to choose the right one. She wanted to spend some time with him so that if Bassanio chooses the wrong casket and she would lose him forever and not see him again.
  • She did so because she wanted to marry him and wished that he makes the right choice.
  • Yes, there was a difference in Portia's treatment towards the other suitors and Bassanio. She does not have any kind of emotion for the prince of Arragon or the prince of Morroco but she had a liking and affection towards Bassanio. She wants to help him in making the right choice and thus, she delays the process.
