This is necessary to prevent the digestive enzymes from digesting the cells that produce them.
Pepsinogen, inactive precursor form of pepsin, is secreted by Chief cells in the stomach.
Pepsinogen is activated by Hydrochloric acid (secretion from Parietal cells) because Hydrochloric acid provides the necessary acidic environment for which pepsin works best.
