During sunrise and sunset, the rays have to travel a larger part of the atmosphere because they are very close to the horizon. Therefore, light other than red is mostly scattered away. Most of the red light, which is the least scattered, enters our eyes. Hence, the sun and the sky appear red.

At sunrise and sunset the sun is near the horizon and so the light of the sun has to travel a greater distance through the atmosphere. The particles present in the atmosphere scatter away the blue light and shorter wavelengths. Therefore, the remaining light of longer wavelengths reaches our eyes. Hence, the sun appears red at sunrise and sunset.
