During sunset or sunrise, the sun's light from its lower end will be bent more than the top end, to reach our eyes and this causes the sun to appear rather elongated, which is the reason for it to appear bigger. Sun appears red because among the wavelengths of colours, red bends the least. At sunset, light passes through a thicker layer of air and most of the blue light, which has the highest wavelengths gets scattered and the red light reaches our eyes rather unchanged.
