why does the temperature of a substance remain constant during its melting point or boiling point?

Because during these points the heat energy is used in changing state. so temp. is not increased

It is so because when the heat is provided at the melting point or the boiling point is used up in overcoming the intermolecular force of attraction and there is no rise in temperature.
