why does the temperature of a substance remain constant during its melting point

When a substance is heated, for eg: water , the temperature reaches the boiling point of the water and becomes constant. When further heated is applied to the substance, the extra heat supplied is used to break the force of attraction between the particles of water. Therefore, during boiling the temperature of a substance remains constant.
