Why does the temperature of a substance remain constant while it is melting or boiling ?

The temperature need to remain constant as the heat applied at that point in not used to increase the temperature but change the state of matter . the heat will give the molecules the kinetic energy and the start dispersing and the change all the characteristic such as the inter molecular space , inter molecular force of attraction..
