Let's understand this taking an example of a solid , say ice.
As ice is a solid , it has strong inter molecular forces of attraction ,i.e , its molecules are tightly bind together. When it is heated , the molecules gain kinetic energy and start vibrating . Then , the molecules start going far from each other . This is called melting stage , this is the stage where the solid starts melting into liquid. The temperature remains constant because the heat is being used to break the mutual forces of attraction between solids.
