The windward side is subjected to prevailing winds which contains enough moisture and on striking with the surrounding mountains and hills which acts as a barrier for them, they sheds their containing moisture in that particular place. That's why the windward side receives more rainfall.
Contrary to windward side, leeward side gets less rainfall because by the time the wind reaches that place, it becomes hot and dry ,containing very low moisture.

Windward side is the side of mountain where rain bearing winds strike
Leeward side is the opposide side of rain shadow region
The moisture laden winds srike at the windward side and hence cause major rainfall there.
By the time it crosses the mountain and reaches the leeward side , they are almost dry
Therfore they shed hardly any moisture there
Hope it helps
