why does viruses form a exception to cell theory

Viruses are non cellular organisms that are characterised by having an inert crystalline structure outside the living cell or their host.
Once they infect a living cell they take over the machinery of the host to replicate themselves, finally killing the host.
Since they are not TRULY living, they form an exception to cell theory.
