Soil humus, or more generally speaking, soil organic matter (SOM), contains carbon which is built up along the course of soil development at a given geography under prevailing climate. the SOM contents depend on the average annual soil temperature at an area. The SOM is a source of food or energy for the microbes in soils. Under hot climate (tropical) the rate of respiration of soil microbes drastically increases as explained by Vant Hoff’s factor or Q10. This leads to depletion of soil carbon. Now, just imagine a cold or temperate climate which would otherwise favour accumulation of soil organic carbon.
