Answer:

Water hyacinth has spongy petioles which contain lot of air. Consequently, the plant becomes lighter than water and floats on the surface of water.

The parenchyma tissue present in water hyacinth has specialized tissue modification which is called Aerenchyma. This tissue has large air cavities due to which it provides the buoyancy to the plant and helps to float in the water.
