Why does water logged soil cause death to plant

it increases the salinity in the soil because of which the roots can't survive and thus respiration,water conduction etc. problems occur. this is the reason ehy plants die

this is because the alkaline salts come up on the surface making the soil alkaline and not suitable for cultivation
