The general rule is, the closer you inhabit to the equator the darker your skin color would be.
This is simply because the rays of the sun are most direct and persistent at the equator and it decreases polewards. Greater incidence of sunlight (ultraviolet rays to be specific) causes greater release of melanin in the skin which causes the darkening of the skin.
