why does white light split up when it passes through a prism ?

white light splits up when it passes through a prism because refraction of light takes place. Refraction is due to the change in medium of the light. When white light from medium 'air' goes to the denser medium of prism, the light rays bends towards the normal leading to the splitting of light into 7 colours ( VIBGYOR ).
