Why does white phosphorus glow in the dark?

White phosphorus emits a faint glow when exposed to oxygen because of a chemical reaction taking place on its surface only if the darkened room its in has oxygen in it. Red Phosphorus doesn't respond to absorbing radiation and that's why it doesn't glow in the dark.
