Why does windward slope of the mountain receive more rainfall then the leeward slope

The windward side of mountains receive moisture bearing winds which strike on its surface, rise upwards, condense, and fall as rain. This air loses its moisture by the the time it reaches the leeward side. Thus, this side receives less rainfall.
