why does wood burn with flame when it is a solid fuel

Initially, wood releases volatile chemicals from the vaporization and decomposition of oils and resins in the wood, it is these ‘wood gases’ which burn with a visible flame. Once all the volatiles have been burned off, all that is left is almost pure carbon, which smolders but does not show a flame.
This is why softwoods like Pine burn energetically, throwing off lots of sparks and bangs, like Shia Lebouf.
While hardwoods like Oak tend to smolder much longer, giving off a more consistent, even heat, like Daniel Craig.
