Why does wurtz reaction needs dry ether ?

Dry ether acts like an inert solvent and helps in solvating the Na+ ion produced . If water was used….it would have ignited Na to produce NaOH and H2. If some other polar aprotic solvent was used..It would have lacked the necessary solvating ability that the coordination bond of Na and sp3 hybridizef O lone pair makes…in short…ether acts like a solvating agent as well a stabilizer and is called Ether of Crystallization.
