this is the reaction that happens
Zn + CuSo4 ----> ZnSO4 +Cu
copper is reduced and zinc is oxidized. ln simple words zinc is taken into solution and copper as a metal is released.
hence holes in zinc plate as copper is replaced with zn in the solution.if we keep it for long time zn plate disappears as it becomes znso4 solution and you can see copper metal separating out. it is a classical example for redox reaction.

Answer:
A number of holes were observed because zinc has displaced copper from CuSo4.
zinc metal has been used to form zinc sulphate, therefore number of holes were observed.
Zn(s) + CuSo4(aq) --->ZnSo4(aq) + Cu(s)
zn(s)-------> metal
CuSo4------> blue
ZnSo4------> (colourless)
