why doesn't aluminum and steel work/ work as well for creating electromagnets?

we cannot use steel as core of electromagnet because steel does not lose magnetism when current is stopped and it becomes permanent magnet. That is why steel is not used in making electro magnet.

Aluminium has higher resistivity and therefore would carry lesser current as compared to copper under the same potential difference. As such, the electromagnet will produce lower magnetic field intensity besides there would be more heat loss in the aluminium wire.
