Why doesn't charcoal produce a flame on burning?

charcoal doesn't produce a flame on burning because it don't have any volatile materials in it that can catch fire..like candle's wax gets evaporated and acts as volatile material and that's why candle produces flame..charcoal die an have any material like that which can catch fire. so it doesn't produce flame..
