The cloudless day time sky is blue because molecule in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light. when we look towards the sun at sunset we see red and orange colour because light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight.

Blue has more wavelength than that of violet. So it refracts at a greater angle. Due to its higher wavelength, it covers more distance and reaches the earth earlier. Due to atmospheric reflection, it reflects and stays in the sky making it to appear blue.
