Plants cannot directly take up the nitrogen from the soil because atmospheric nitrogen is present as dinitrogen and it has triple bonds in its structure so, Plants cannot readily take them. Enzymes released by micro organisms in the atmosphere or soil they break these bonds and fix this dinitrogen to ammonia and this is taken by the plants.
