If a leaf falls from a tree, it quickly dies as it is disconnected from the plant and has no access to essential nutrients, water and cannot conduct photosynthesis. However, if a leaf is kept in water, it forms a protective layer against it and prevents it from rotting very quickly. The water keeps providing nourishment to the leaf, which helps to ensure the gentle look and feel. In reality the leaf , even in water is actually dead but because it is able to preserve it's look for longer, it seems like it is living and still ok
