Soap reacts with hard water because of the sodium ions linked with the fatty acids chain reacts with the calcium and magnesium ions in hard water. The functional group in a detergent is SO3 Na and this does not react with the calcium and magnesium ions in hard water

Detergent are better cleansing agent than soaps because they do not form insoluble calcium and magnesium salt with hard water and hence can be used for washing even with hard water

ana03nya: can you tell me why detergents form salts when they react with mg and ca?
ana03nya: not*
avelinteresa: This is because charged calcium and magnesium particles present in the water react with soap to form an insoluble substance.
ana03nya: and why not detergents?
avelinteresa: because the calcium and magnesium salts of detergents are soluble in water.
avelinteresa: is ur dout cleared
ana03nya: what do detergents consist of?
ana03nya: no
avelinteresa: Surfactants
ana03nya: and what happens when they react with mg and ca salts in hardwater?
