why dont the leaves of lotus plants rot in water

The purpose of this adaptation was to allow the lotus itself to float on the water instead of sinking to the surface of the water. The plant becomes water repellent because of the fact that this waxy coating of both the leaves and stem surfaces is hydrophobic, meaning that it repels water and does not get itself wet.
