HCL gas doesn't change the color paper because acids do not disassociate into ions when they are dry, they disassociate only when the are wet.Disassociation of ions is needed because they let the waster molecules spread so that they could change the color of litmus paper. To check the nature of HCL gas we need to moisturize the litmus paper and bring it near the gas, then the color of the litmus paper changes.

Heya user..!!

Here is your answer..!!

_________________________________________________________________

BECAUSE OF THE FOLLOWING REASON :

  • We know that the colour of the litmus is changed by H⁺ ions of an acid. Dry HCL does not dissociate to give H⁺ions. Acids dissociate to give ions only in the aqueous medium. Since in this case, neither HCL is in aqueous form nor is the litmus paper wet, so the colour of litmus paper does not change.
