why e/m value of positive rays doesn't depends on nature of gas?

A cathode ray consists of beam of electrons so, cathode rays do not depend upon the nature of the gas. Therefore, whichever gas is used in the discharge tube, the nature of cathode rays remains the same. And hence the ratio of e/m also remains the same.
