They did do bcoz they thought that the British were actually kind but unaware of the true condition of India and thus, they were unable to help Indians.
Secondly, they had full faith in the British sense of Justice and fairplay. They thought that the religious superstitious in India was the reason of the bad condition of Indians. And the British rule in India would help India to grow as the Indians will be educated and would gradually make India stronger and self sufficient.

Early nationalist believed the British and failed that sooner or later they would agree to publish represent ative institutions in India. They did not see that the British interest clashed with the Indian interest .
