If Earth moves in a circular orbit around the sun then it would have keep a constant velocity . But according to Kepler , Earth has slightly varying velocities (and we use its average velocity generally ) and hence it moves in an elliptical orbits with the sun in one of its focus and hence Earth is sometimes closer to the sun than the other times...
