because the earth wire connects to the earth and it absorbs shocks that is why it is longer and thicker.

The Earth Pin is made long so that the earth connection is made first.. this ensures the safety of the user because if the appliance is defective, the fuse may blow off as soon as the live pin gets connected. Further the earth pin is thicker so that even by mistake it can't be inserted into the hole of the socket for the live or neutral connection.
